I was born outside of Canada, but my dad was born in Canada in the 1920's. He moved to America in the 30's. The changes to the law of 2014-15 seem to have finally conferred birth citizenship on my dad ( now deceased sadly) and myself as first generation born abroad. Is this so?
Depending on when your father took U.S. citizenship AND your date of birth, you are either a Canadian citizen as of 2009 or 2015, but, in either case, yes, you are a Canadian citizen. Your citizenship is retroactive to your date of birth OR January 1, 1947, whichever date is most recent. If you have any children born outside of Canada, however, they are not Canadian citizens (unless, of course, they have a Canadian-born mother).
