This is what I found on AIr-INDIA site

"PLEASE ENSURE THE CARRY-ON BAGS IN THE CABIN DO NOT EXCEED THE DIMENSIONS OF 55 CMS X 40 CMS X 20 CMS AND A MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF 8 KGS"

Hope this helps.

Also a good news, student can carry 23*3 bags, just call Air-INDIA helpline and confirm.YOu will have to show student VISA at time of boarding/checking.

:) :)

Dimensions wont be an issue in "checked in" baggage............

The dimensions are too big. They will likely make you check the bag.

Matlab aren't bags usually checked irrespective of their weight and size? I dunno thats why posed the question to scylla.

A "checked bag" in airline terms, is a bag that has to go in the hold of the aircraft.
The original question was about a "carry on" bag.

If a "carry on" bag is too big or over weight, it will have to be "checked" and stored in the hold of the aircraft.
Of course if you have already used your "checked bag" allowance, you are also likely to have to pay extra in this situation.

Hmm, I was actually asking about Check In bags only and not Carry On bags.

OHH, wait. When I said CHECKED, I meant inspected and not "Checked IN".

So my original question was are all the bags inspected personally or just by the X-ray machine?

Hi,

OP intend to go by AirIndia where the permitted dimension is 55 X 40 X 20, where as he hold a bag with the dimension of 61 X 28 X 31. I do not think if there is any need to worry since there is almost no difference between these dimensions. Of course, he needs to take care of weight.

It depends...

Checked bags should be x-rayed, and can be opened for inspection (without you being in attendance).
Carry on bags are usually x-rayed, and can be opened for inspection (while you are in attendance)

THAT answers my question :). Thanks Baloo.
