Hi, me and my partner with our dog are planning on getting a working visa to come to Alberta, Canada this year . What website should we go through or agency to do our application? We want to make sure we have everything we need? I know we have to get police checks, dog passport and vaccines, jobs, money, a place to stay, health insurance, pet insurance, work permit. A lot of the sites are saying some different things so it is getting confusing. Am I missing anything? I also just got a qualification here in the UK - Level 3 NVQ in business administration (distinction). Is this recognised in Canada?

How are you planning on getting the work permit?

We have some friends out there who were going to help us get a job where they work and then apply for one or apply for our own jobs and once we have secured one then apply for a work permit.

So how are you getting a work permit? Do your employer's have a LMIA? IEC?

Is the employer willing to go through the LMIA process? The above plan is only feasible if the employer is willing to go through the expense and time of getting an approved LMIA.

Are you UK nationals by any chance?

I don't know, we haven't applied for jobs yet, we're going to start applying in the summer because we're trying to get some money behind us first to be able to find a place to live and transport ourselves/our dog, so we're converting a van which should be done in June and once we sell that we will be starting the application. I just want to know what kind of things I'll need to get sorted before I start the application as you only have 20 days to complete it and we're not yet in that position. Yes we are UK nationals. My partner is an engineer, would it be better for him to do an application and add me to it as I only do accounting/admin work? I think an employer would be more willing to go through that process for him as engineers are supposedly in demand in Canada.

There is no work permit application for you to start. You need a job offer with LMIA to even apply for a closed work permit. An employer needs to pay $1k and file for a LMIA showing no Canadian or PR could be hired, only you. Then you apply for a closed work permit. The process takes months and few employers bother.

How old are you? You could both apply for an IEC but you may not both be accepted. You need to show funds, health insurance and a return ticket. Probably will not get it by the summer.

Thank you, its all very complicated. I'll speak to him about it later. I think an IEC is what we want to apply for not a PR as we don't have the money for that but we want to apply for the IEC to eventually apply for PR afterwards. We are both 23. Do you need a return in case you get declined entry at the airport?

You wouldn't be eligible for PR. If 23, you both need to apply for an IEC. You both need to show a minimum of $2500 plus health insurance. It is based on quotas so once the quotas are reached per country, it is closed for that year. PR is only possible if you are eligible based on your education, language and skilled work experience. All information on the IEC is on the IRCC website.

You are not guarantee a work permit through the IEC program. This is a lottery and there are generally more people applying than spots available. My recommendation is that you enter the IEC pool and the wait to see if you are selected before you make any plans to travel to Canada. This will be the easiest way for you to get work permits by far. If you are not selected through the IEC program, then you need to go the route of getting a job offer and approved LMIA which takes a very long time and is very difficult generally to do.

I'm not sure what you mean by "do you need a return in case you get declined entry at the airport". If you are asking if you need to have a return flight if you are traveling to Canada as a visitor, then yes, you should have a return flight and not a one way.

Okay, I have submitted an eligibility check for an IEC application to MDC Canada. I thought you meant return flight for the same day, if the IEC is a year do you need to have a return flight as you usually can't book flights a year in advance?

Just use the IRCC website. You don't need a consultant for an IEC permit. You can get a return flight and then change it once in Canada. Also, it is possible only one of you is selected.
