My husband and I would like to move to Canada with our 3 month old baby. However we are wondering if we really need an immigration lawyer. She is charging 3500USD plus 13% tax. We live in Jamaica and at the current exchange that is almost 500,000.00JMD. Has anyone here been successful doing the process on your own?

I have a different issue. I am expecting my PR Visa in a few days time. My fiancee is studying masters in Canada. She is on study permit there. Can we get married in our home country (India) and get our marriage registered after my PR visa? If we fly back to Canada after that, can we get married again in Canada after I receive my PR card?

No - you absolutely cannot do that. If you do that, you'll be committing misrepresentation by landing as a single person when you are in fact married and will never be able to sponsor your spouse for PR. You cannot get married anywhere (either in Canada or in India) until AFTER you have officially landed in Canada (after your PR visa is issued) and become a PR.

Under what immigration program are you attempting to move to Canada?

No - you don't have to wait until you get your PR card. However you do have to wait until you have landed in Canada and become a PR using your PR visa. Getting the PR visa doesn't mean you are a PR - you still have to go through the landing procedures.

So I can get married according to the Canadian Laws after I am done with the landing procedures. Is that right? What are formalities that make up the landing procedure and how long will it take to get done?
