I understand that they have visa until 2020,
but they should follow the time that they were allowed to stay
in Canada, and since immigration says that the time was 6 months that
means that they have overstay in Canada for 18 months,

they could apply for an extension back then,
or leave the country and re-enter,
that would save a lot of headaches,
but for now, you need to follow the advise of your lawyer,

hope everything works well for everybody

The law does not automatically give them 2 years. CIC clearly states that a super visa allows entry for up to 2 years. The border officer decides on entry how much time to actually give. If their passports were not stamped giving 2 years, then they were only allowed the standard 6 months. It was entirely their responsibility to make sure of this.

They need to immediately leave Canada. There is no other option to correct their current illegal status.

Agreed their only option is to return home. Since they overstayed by such a long period of time, once they return home, they should really remain there for a minimum of six months before attempting to return.
