Does the university reputation/ranking and your academics help get a visa if your fund proof is a little shaky?

By the way, I was granted a visitor visa to canada back in 2007 or 2008, dont remember. It was in my old passport and I never used the visa. I mean I didnt enter canada as my plans changed. Will this effect my study permit application now?
