I am a new immigrant to Canada, and I landed in CA the first time about 20 days ago. And I am leaving within a week to UK for my postgraduate education. I have just heard that the period of my education can be counted as time I stay in Canada. Is this true? And if it is, how can I apply for it?

Not true, you have to reside in Canada for 2 years in every 5 year period, (there are some exceptions, but study isn't) or you lose your PR.

hello PMM,

i'm glad i saw this post cuz i had this question in my mind but never knew what was the law about it...i want to sponsor my partner to come to Canada; he is Syrian citizen and residing in UAE and he needs to reside in UAE for 5 permanent years so that he can be exempted from the military service back in Syria...he still needs to stay 2 years more and hence i was not sure when to start the sponsorship process; i would like to start right away but then if he gets his PR and still needs to stay in UAE 1 year is it possible? the last thing i want is for him to get his PR and then loose it

thank you very much
