Hi

I have been offered to join Post Bac Diploma in Economics (Fall 2015), by Carleton University, Ottawa.

My one year course fee would be 22600 CAD fee and fee for the first term of the course will be around 11600 CAD. How much funds do I need to show if I want my wife to accompany me and stay with me, while I study in Canada.

Second, I want to apply for open work permit for my wife. Is she eligible for that? If yes, what are the formalities and likeliness to get work permit before landing there.

You'll need to show a bank balance that covers your first year of fees, $10K in living expenses - plus additional funds to cover your wife, and travel expenses. So you would probably need to show a bank balance of $40K to be approved.

Yes - your wife qualifies for an open work permit. However it's impossible for any of us to say whether it will be approved or not.

First Years tuition has to be paid off. $10000 GIC has to deposited in Scotia. Bringing your wife with you may be a challenge as she would have to apply for a dependent visa, the approval rates are really low but not impossible.

Once she is here the dependent visa automatically gives her the right to work for as long as you have a valid study permit. It can be extended once you get your work permit as well.

The better option is to apply for her PR directly from your home country, it secures your status as well.

It is my opinion, I would suggest getting some professional advice along these lines.

Thanks a lot for your replies guys.

But I think 40k is more than what is required. I have visited an agent and I was advised to show 10K expenses, a deposit slip of fee for first term i.e. around 10k and 4k additional for if I take my wife with me.That would be it.

Rest, I will give it a try and apply for the visa for my wife. If they deny visa to her, I may apply that after a 3 or 6 month gap.

You need to show funds covering first year tuition - not just first term/semester tuition.

I just want to know if there would be any problem in our visa application, if my husband will apply for open work permit? Based from what Ive read previously, you can combine both student permit and open work permit for my husband if you are applying on paper. How about if youre applying online? Thanks
