A typical or not so typical work related situation!

Dear All,

I need some guidance regarding the work experience verification thing. Last week, I was laid off from my job and I have received a good character certificate from my employer. I want to inquire as to how will the canadian authorities verify my work experience credentials in this case? I am particularly worried regarding the response of my ex-boss with whom I had a very acrimonious relationship due to the fact that I reported him to senior management. What if he speaks something wrong about me as vengeance?

To prove work experience, you need an employment letter signed and on company letterhead. It needs to outline your time you worked there, wages/salary, job title and roles and responsibilities. It needs a contact name.

Agreed. But as I have heard from people the contact person is usually from the HR dept who redirects it to the immediate reporting person. And as I said that a high acrimonious relationship with him means I can't expect a good feedback. In that case, what recourse do I have? For e.g if the verification team asks, " How did you find Miss XYZ" and if he answers "Not up to the mark" or something similar then will it carry weight?

You need an employment letter not a reference letter. The chances of your employer being contacted are low.
