So my husband landed 54 days ago, we still have not received his PR card.

We called CIC last week and they said it is still "in process".

Understanding that the people who could best answer this are more than likely no longer on the forum as they are done... has anyone ever heard of this?

It does seem a little long (mine took 5 weeks) but bear in mind when CIC talk about "days to process" I believe they are talking "business or working days"... so 30 days would effectively be 6 working weeks (42 days) and not 4 standard weeks and a bit!

It states that the Service Standard is "within 40 business days" (8 "working" weeks) which would be 56 days.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/service-standards.asp#prcard

Initial Permanent Resident Card
It is our goal, for 80% of new permanent residents, to send an initial permanent resident card within 40 business days from the time the confirmation of permanent resident form is completed at a port of entry or at a CIC-inland office.
For any enquiries about this service standard, please contact the Call Centre.

If they have told you it is "still in progress" I wouldn't worry too much. If you need it urgently call again and tell them :)

Can you still get a job and travel if you don't yet have the physical PR card?

You can go to Services Canada with your passport and COPR visa and obtain an SI number. You do not have to have your PR card in order to get one. You do not have to have a PR card to get a job, you can show your COPR visa which shows you are a landed PR together with your SI number (the card will arrive approximately 4 weeks after applying but they issue you with a paper showing your number at the time of application).

As to travel, if you mean "out of the country", then theoretically you need a travel permit to return to Canada, however, if you are from a visa exempt country you should be able to enter Canada on your passport alone. If you need your PR card in order to travel, you can inform them that you are requesting an urgent processing and tell them the date of travel - they will expedite it if possible.

For travel by land US/Canada (by motor vehicle or on foot) you do not need to show your PR card, just a passport. PR card's are generally required for air transportation to Canada.

Hi PMM,

what does my wife need to travel to the US by land? A Philippines passport with COPR and US visitor visa? or can she travel to the US by land once she gets her PR card?

Thank you.

1. assuming she has a US visa, she can fly to the US, but without a PR card, most airlines will not board her to fly back to Canada. So with only the COPR as proof she would have to enter Canada by non commercial carrier, i.e. a car.

Even though she has a PR card like PMM said she is not a canadian citizen and still needs a US visa.

Thank you guys for the inputs. Greatly appreciate it.

So, the bottom line is;

1) She need a US visitor visa ( which she need to apply at the US consulate here in Toronto )

2) A valid Canadian passport, and in order to get one, have to wait till she became a Canadian citizen (which is in 3 years )

3) Or, not go to Buffalo and spend money. he he he.

Have a nice day guys. :)
