Hi Guys

Bear with me for my ignorance.

your help will be very much appreicated if you have infomration at this.

My Brother is workingn for UN and posted outside Canada. He doest not complete his 1095 days physical presence in Canada. Will he fall under the same category that if you are serving for Govt. of Canada / Armed force your days will be counted. I am not sure about UN any one have information at this or can guide which agency can have right information at this ?

thanks in advance

Badar

only if he works for Canadian Government, which i dont think its UN. Unless he works for Ministry of Foreign Affair that based in NYC.

Is his UN position related to serving/supporting Canada in any way?

Yeah he is posted under WFP in Yeman own UN Diplomat passport. All his bank accounts are in NY UN Office but his actual Head Office for the agency falls under Rome / Italy as he is UN / WFP Employee

Any thoughts ?

The UN World Food Programme, while laudable, is not related to the government of Canada, so it's not going to count as in-Canada time for PR maintenance the way working for a Canadian embassy would.

I know your question was about qualification for citizenship, but, as far as I know, only members of the Canadian Armed Forces who were enrolled in the military for 2 out of the 4 previous years are allowed to count time abroad for citizenship.

UN is not Canadian. If foreign affairs sends you let's say Haiti it may count for or
If you are in Canadian military and you are sent to Afg. It will get counted towards your citizenship.

Agreed with what others have said. His UN work doesn't qualify him for an exemption unfortunately.

And it won't preserve his PR status either.

I recommend that your brother consider whether he can maintain his PR residency obligation (2/5 years) in Canada. Unless his spouse is a Canadian citizen, he may run into challenges given all his work overseas.

good luck.

You can try calling the CIC hotline. Or read through the information on the CIC web site:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5445ETOC.asp#appendixA

However I think it's quite obvious to most that working for the UN is not the same thing as working for the Canadian government or Canadian armed forces. The UN is not an arm of either the Canadian government or Canadian armed forces. Working for the UN also does not qualify as working for a Canadian company outside of Canada. So no credit for days spent outside of Canada either for PR or citizenship.

Forgive me if I misunderstood, badar, but your comment above makes it seem like you've never heard of the PR residency obligation, doubt its existence and do not know what agency is in charge of Immigration and PR status. This is surprising for someone who is a PR.
