TFW living in Canada, working in USA

I am an American living in Canada as a temporary resident. I moved here from the states last year to work. I’m considering resigning from my Canadian employer and taking a job opportunity in the states that pays much better, is very flexible and has me working in a border city close to my home...

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

Okay, I will check with B.C. MSP to see if this is feasible. I’ll update you here once I find out so we both know for sure! Worst case, I’ll just keep my U.S. insurance rather than MSP as it will be much cheaper and provide better drug coverage, and purchase travel insurance while I’m in Canada.

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

Let me put it this way, as for some reason I seem to have struck a misinformed nerve with folks: Irrespective of residential ties in both countries and frequent travel between both nations, if I meet the physical requirement of being legally in Canada as a PR 1,095 days within 5 years, will...

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

From Canada.ca: “If you are a factual resident or a deemed resident of Canada and are considered to be a resident of another country that has a tax treaty with Canada, you may be considered a deemed non‑resident of Canada for income tax purposes. If you are a deemed non-resident, you must...

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

Not according to the CRA and the Canadian government. If I spend over 183 days in Canada and have a primary residence in the United States, which Canada has a tax treaty with, and I pay income tax there, I am a “deemed non-resident for income tax purposes” in Canada, which is treated equally to...

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

Hey! Well, whether you find it insulting or not, it is legal. There is a tax treaty between the two nations for a reason, and part of that reason is I’ll be spending USD in Canada and contributing to the economy. In the eyes of the CRA, if you have physical residence in both nations and there is...

PR with both U.S./Canadian address, cross border commuting to the U.S. for work...physical presence for citizenship? Healthcare? Car import? Taxes?

Hi all, here's the backstory: I'm a U.S. citizen working in Vancouver as a TFW, and currently waiting for my PR application to process. I'm about to take a new job in the United States with significantly more pay and a great compensation package. It's a virtual gig, but requires frequent...

    Processing time: GSS stream

I sent IRCC documentation from my employer demonstrating the job was essential in nature (I’m a biomedical researcher). Three days later my work permit approved June 2. Travelled to Canada June 9 with no issues, but I did have to show my POE letter and letter of essential nature from my employer...

    Outland closed work permit issued?

Hey - no visa required as I’m American. I’m not sure what my NOC code is...I’m LMIA-exempt and I think my employer put that in for me. But based on my job description, it’s 4011 (skill type A).

Entry to canada with an approved work permit - ICT

By the way - if you don't mind sharing, when did you apply for your closed WP and when did you get approval? Did you apply online? What's your nationality/where did you apply?

Entry to canada with an approved work permit - ICT

My point being, you really won't know until you get there. Therefore, I'd say it's highly risky to travel to the border - unless you are close by and can spare the resources to do so, I'd wait.

Entry to canada with an approved work permit - ICT

Honestly, it totally depends on the CBSA officer that admits you. Ultimately, it's at their discretion whether information technology is essential or not. When I tried, the officer denied my entry, saying only healthcare workers were allowed through.

Entry to canada with an approved work permit - ICT

Pretty high. Unless your job is directly related to healthcare or essential services that support Canadians, you'll be turned away.

Work permit processing in the US

Interesting. I thought this was only for the “processing of LMIAs.”
