Flight choices for those with approved study permits before Match 18, 2020

Hello Shahin! Have you travelled already? Is there any positive news / information please? Thank you so much!

Yeah I agree, the trade off is exactly that :( 24 hours flight versus unending uncertainty over entry. :(

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

They are indeed requiring an essential reason for entry, which needs in-person components. An IRCC officer addressed international students virtually in a session conducted by the university and they clearly said that online classes are not an essential reason for entry, and online students...

Thanks a lot for the advice! I'll print that from the portal. But I have to travel nearly 24 hours by flight ::( wish they can give out some clear guidelines for graduate-level research students...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

Yes I know, I have to try my luck :( But i need the support letter from the University, which is what I am trying to get.

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

Why will I be refused entry? I have legitimate reasons for being present for graduate lab work on campus. I need a support letter from the University, which is not as easy to get from universities.

Important new measures on post-graduation work permit eligibility for students beginning programs online

Not everyone has a 1 year program. The 50% limit still applies to those whose programs are more than 1 year in length. That issue aside, what about the lab / co-op work at the graduate level? None of this can be done without entering.

    Ircc is making students depressed

But really happy to see that they have at least announced something today! So they're at least aware of some of our issues! Thank god for that! Sending out positive wishes & hope into the universe! Hope they can continue providing more information and clarity to us!

    Ircc is making students depressed

Yes true, they may extend the Apeil 2021 deadline. But 50% will definitely be exceeded if it extends to, say, August 2021. We now need information on how the 50% is going to be calculated. The Universities are in a different world altogether. Bizarre policy issues. IRCC is making changes...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

My realistic mind says travel restrictions are not going to be lifted till at least the end of 2022. I realize why - it's because nobody wants Covid cases to spike out of control in their country. All that's understandable. The latest update today also says at the end that removing the...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

2 classes are online. Other things are lab, grad research, thesis work ! Not entirely online. Still supposedly "non-essential". Deferring is not as easy for those going into very selective university-level graduate programs that have only one entry per year - the September entry.

    Ircc is making students depressed

No these measures are directed at those who've just submitted an application. Not for those with an approval & who are supposedly "exempt" can enter. And the fully online from home aspect applies only to programs of 1 year or less. What about programs of more than 1 year? The 50% rule still...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

I'm just curious too, about your question: what difference does that make? There are so many with a full approval before March 18th, and aren't being allowed to enter. There is no "exemption" in practice. This confusion is what I've been asking more information about. While they go on...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

No no, that measure of studying online from home fully without being penalized, only applies to those whose programs are 1 year or less. If it's more than 1 year, the 50% limit still holds. What if the 50% will be exceeded for such students before April 2021?

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

No information on that yet. We need more clarity & more information. Even university international student advisors say they don't yet know how the 50% will be calculated. It's going to be September already! I just wish all of them could sort of come together to give us some clarity :(

Important new measures on post-graduation work permit eligibility for students beginning programs online

No, location is still a concern. This is not my case, but the measures immediately bring to mind the following question: What if the program is online, but more than 1 year? Then, according to these rules, at least 50% should be completed in Canada, right? What if the 50% will be exceeded...

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

No man! That "exemption" is of hardly any use, in practice. We need an "essential" reason to enter even if we have an approval before March 18th. I wish they really exempted & allowed those with an approval before March 18th.

    Ircc is making students depressed

The new measures announced today only pertain to those who've not yet applied for a study permit. It says: to be eligible for these measures, one should submit an application for a program starting in spring / summer / fall 2020 or Jan 2021. But what about those with a full approval before...

    Ircc is making students depressed

My situation is equally painful, if not more. I have a full approval before March 18th, and still am unable to travel / enter for want of an "essential" reason. I am starting a research-intensive graduate program :(

    PGWP UPDATE WITH ORIGINAL POST

Thank you!!! I guess I'm the only one confused now, again :( What about those with an already approved visa before March 18th? When can those people enter? Are those people with a full approval also subject to the same regulations as those who've just applied & waiting for the AIP? Oh god :(
