Taxes/Payroll - Working in US/ Living in Windsor

    1. Non-resident if you didn't even land as a PR until this month (Jan 2024) 2. If you spend less than 183 days in Canada then you're likely not a tax resident, especially if you have stronger ties in the US/outside of Canada 3. Commuting = Canadian tax residency since you're indicating (by...

PR card renewal - outside of Canada

Can a PR card be renewed while you're physically outside but have met RO? I read online that it can't be renewed while you're outside because IRCC won't mail the card overseas. But can you not list your Canadian address to have the PR card sent to?

“Proof showing that you meet the residency obligation…” now mandatory?

    1. Highlighted text should explain the emoji:eek: 2. You should make genuine attempts at being concise. You won't draw any audience will lengthy opinion pieces on the forum Bottomline: IRCC and CBSA must work in tandem to confirm entry and exit records to determine "physical presence". A signed...

“Proof showing that you meet the residency obligation…” now mandatory?

Yeah, no. You clearly have a bias against those not in a position Yeah, sounds like a biased perspective. Not everyone with a PR is in a position to "reside, work, study and participate in Canadian society" for any number of reasons. Unless you're unilaterally entitled to change and interpret...

“Proof showing that you meet the residency obligation…” now mandatory?

I'm not a fan of these changes. It should be the Departments responsibility to verify whether someone was physically present or not in the country for the 730 or more days required. CBSA records should be the go to. There are people who have spent 730 days in 5 years spread sporadically over...

How soon after 1095 days did you apply for citizenship

I'm hoping to be eligible for citizenship end of this year/Q1 next year. I've maintained the physical presence calculator and synced it with information from CBSA (I requested the records) and CBP (US) where all of my travels outside of Canada have occurred. Are these reliable...

Daily commute (Detroit-Windsor) (H1b and Canada PR)

There system occasionally messes. Happened to me a few times in the past and then got fixed on its own. Make sure you're entering the correct details, and if you renewed your passport recently, then try to enter older passport details and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, call CBP and...

Daily commute (Detroit-Windsor) (H1b and Canada PR)

Yes, unfortunately every entry has to be typed unless you can automate it in some way through a web script or something.

Daily commute (Detroit-Windsor) (H1b and Canada PR)

Per the instructions, you've got to list all of your absences including day trips on the application. Easiest way is to use the online physical presence calculator but you can do it in excel or word too. The online calculator is official and probably more reliable/acceptable

PR Card Renewal & New - 2022 Processing Timeline

So you've met the 730 days requirement but have no tax returns. IRCC can check with CRA and then what? Ask the applicant hey why did you not file taxes? And the applicant says not required. And then whay? IRCC says okay cool and moves on? I'm not sure what the meaning behind that circular cycle...

Daily commute (Detroit-Windsor) (H1b and Canada PR)

Are there any cross border commuters here who worked remotely from their home in Canada for part year in 2022 and traveled for work to the US once the border was fully open? How did you file your Canadian taxes? Did you take full foreign tax credit for FICA (social security and Medicare)?

Taxes/Payroll - Working in US/ Living in Windsor

Thanks. I don't have an online CRA account, so I guess I'll have to create one. To clarify: for state tax filings, in your experience, do we need transcripts from the relevant state tax authority, or will the actual filed returns be sufficient?

Taxes/Payroll - Working in US/ Living in Windsor

Hi harirajmohan: When you say CRA needs original, what do they consider original? I get a copy of W2 online (not mail) from my employer. Can I print and send that? Also, do you have to attach state tax transcript as well? Or can you attach IRS transcript + state tax return filed?
