No you are not allowed to work until you are granted a work permit. First approval takes months. Its also not guaranteed. So unless you have means to support yourself and a strong case for asylum approval...its not your best choice.

Be honest and ensure all your timing match up. If you mess up 1 date then they will not approve it. Give eye contact and always answer truthfully. Whatever you wrote they will pick questions from it so ensure that you remember what you wrote. If they question your credibility then that's it...
