Update to above timeline: Citizenship certificate arrived in the mail on January 28, 2022. So, 10 days after online ceremony. Passport application was sent in on the same day I received the certificate. I'll keep you posted on Passport timeline.

You cannot enter Canada by air travel or boat with an expired PR card, you will need a PRTD for this. You could try and enter with a car via land border. I guess that would work (not with a commercial bus service though as far as I know).

I have done this 5 years ago when I moved back to Canada after staying abroad while my PR card expired. Basically, for the PRTD you need to proof that you still fulfill the PR residency requirements. Once you are back in Canada you simply apply for a new PR card with basically the same...
