Are you still supposed to get a COPR form when you're visa exempt? - Not sure if it would be part of the package, but yes - they most likely want to return the photographs. That's the only thing that was returned to me when I was picking up the visas and COPR-s for my family.

Small correction: not all applicants from the former Soviet/Russian countries are requested to submit their passports to Moscow. My spouse is from Belarus and had her visa issued by the Warsaw VO.

Disclaimer: I can't guarantee that this applies to outland applications, so you might wanna call CIC and confirm that it would be applicable if/when you're issued a PPR. But I'd assume it is, otherwise it wouldn't have been provided on our PPR. Here's what option #3 for submitting passport(s)...

I went to the Warsaw VO in person with the passports of my family members, and they stamped the visas on the spot.

Took 3 weeks for our application, but we also had an outstanding RPRF which we were requested to pay. That itself may have caused a bit of delay, and could've been even faster if we had paid upfront.

Our app status changed to Background Check - In Progress on the day we received RPRF payment request, i.e. Dec 22. And then it changed to DM on Jan 16.

Give it some time. We got DM status on Jan 16, and it wasn't until Jan 24 that we received a PPR email.

I went to Warsaw yesterday and got visas stamped into both my spouse's and step-daughter's passports, as well as picked up COPR-s. The staff at the Embassy was very quick and helpful, so it didn't even take 20 minutes to be in and out. They also returned all the photographs that we had enclosed...

Oh no, luckily we've been together all this time, albeit living overseas in Eastern Europe. And I've had to make about a dozen trips back to Canada to maintain the house so we'd have a place to move into :)
