Canadian citizen sponsoring English spouse (PhD student in Canada)

Hi there, I was in a very similar situation to your partner-- a graduate student in a common law relationship with a Canadian citizen. I don't think we took any longer than most married folks. The process was just as smooth. No doc requests. We even got married 6 months after sending the...

Yep. You can go to Service Canada immediately after landing with your validated COPR. You can have your SIN within 5 minutes, plus however long you have to wait in line. You could begin working the very next day if everything were timed right and a job was lined up.

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Your validated COPR should be enough to get you started (this may depend on the province). You can trade your US DL for a Canadian one-- though until you get the PR Card, you may be given a paper license that can be turned into a photocard once you can show them your PR Card. For Health...

Just regular, untrackable mail, with no indication as to when they send it! Yay CIC!

Yes, you can apply with your validated COPR within the first year of landing. They certainly don't expect you to wait another two plus months to begin working.

Not expecting the PR card for another couple months haha. Current processing time is about 71 days.

Landing was quite easy really, and I had the fortune of getting a nice officer. When I reentered Canada, I presented my passport and COPR. The officer asked me a few standard questions (do you have weapons, over $10k cash, fruits and veggies, etc.). I got redirected into secondary where the same...

    Government French Classes in BC?

Hi, I just landed in Vancouver yesterday :) Although I am a native English speaker, I want to commit to my life in Canada by mastering both official languages. I noted on CIC's site for immigrants to Canada, it is noted that funded language classes are available for newcomers...

Nope, not at all. We still met all the requirements of common law sponsorship and informed them of the change as soon as we received our marriage certificate. The same forms are required for marriage and CL, so there was no document request or anything beyond me volunteering a scan of the...

Thanks, that's what I had thought (no IMM at Point Roberts, but yes at Peace Arch/Pac Highway). Strange that the site wouldn't be reflecting this! Even off the map, though, on the Douglas crossing page, IMM services are not listed.

I'm starting to plan for landing for once I receive the COPR in the mail (I'm hoping to drive down and flagpole more or less immediately)... Looking at the CBSA site, though, it seems that there are no border crossings in BC with IMM services? I was quite confident I could just drive down to...

It starts 365 days after the day you moved in together and lived in a "marriage-like relationship."

Received confirmation of permanent residence but with my sponsor's maiden name?!

Does it matter? Under BC marriage law, I was told by our commissioner and my reading of the statutes that my wife (who sponsored me) can continue to use either her maiden name or married name as she chooses for different organizations. Her name was not changed by a court of law. While she has...

    MAY 2015 Spouse Application OUTLAND

I posted this in the Ottawa and US threads, but I got DM today. I'm a US citizen, initially sponsored by my common-law partner, though we got married two months ago (and sent all the paperwork to CIC, which may be why our case was behind the slate of DMs from last week?) In case it's of...
