So you are supposed to submit your passport in paper application? I had the same question. But passport is submitted along with paper based application and in that case you have no idea whether it is approved or refused.

Was it your friend inviting you to Canada? I assume you haven't travelled anywhere before. Also, depends the funds and whether you were going to sponsor your entire trip.
