    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

I think it's extremely unlikely to pass before the summer recess. The issues raised today were pretty serious, the media would crucify the conservatives if they pushed the bill through now that the objections are a matter of public record. They'll need to respond to the various issues raised...

Child born to Canadian parent outside Canada.

Just a note that you're automatically a US citizen if you're born there, you don't need to apply. The only thing you'll need to apply for would be a passport. When entering the US, it'll be assumed you're a US citizen if you're born there, unless you can show a declaration of renunciation. I...

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

One of the Liberal MPs today said "the law could stay exactly the same as long as they fix the appalling processing delays". On the whole though, nobody is fully against the bill, it introduces several elements and uses the word "terrorist" enough that it would be political suicide to be...

New Citizenship Bill Thursday Feb 6th

I posted a summary in another thread. Today was mostly lawyers worried about the wording of the bill, highlighting many of the potential abuses of how it is currently written.

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

Today was all lawyers as witnesses. Some were for, some were against. All agreed that the wording of some clauses was poor and should be re-written. Key points: - intent to reside - although the Minister has said it's not intended to apply after citizenship, all the lawyers agreed that...

The Conversavative Government is just lying

Well, the bill explicitly removes the use of pre-PR time when counting towards citizenship, that seems pretty clear that they will not credit it to me. I think we'll see it re-appear, my guess is that it was only removed to use as a bargaining chip during negotiations. Given that there are...

The Conversavative Government is just lying

That was the number quoted by a CIC staffer during the recent discussions on Bill C-24. It was given in response to a question about why the pre-PR time was being removed in the bill.

Child born to Canadian parent outside Canada.

In most provinces, health care is given to residents, not citizens. Anyone legally residing in a province becomes eligible for its health care plan after a certain period (Ontario and Alberta are 3 months), look on each provinces health care site for "Am I eligible?". You don't need to be a...

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

I think you're right, early next year is likely. My hunch is that the current government wants to use reduced processing times and "stronger laws" as a platform for the next election (approx Oct 2015). They'll need the bill to be law for 6 months to get any decent statistics.

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

I'm in the same situation, I'll become eligible around Sept 15th under the current rules. I'm hoping either to apply under the current rules, or that they will extend rather than eliminate the days-before-PR rules. There are several groups yet to speak who will raise the removal of...

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

The second reading will probably conclude after the Standing Committee finishes discussing the bill. The committee has 5 meetings allocated to discussing the issue. April 28th, 30th and May 7th are the only ones I can find dates for right now. Once the committee is done, I imagine more time...

Residence Calculator and proof of english language question

    1. Don't put the St Lucia trip as a separate line. Just one line, left Canada on Dec 18, returned on Jan 7th, and put "Visiting family in Trinidad, with a short trip to St Lucia for holiday" as the reason. Only the dates that you left and returned to Canada matter. 2. You'll need to submit...

    Bill C-24 Committee Stage

The minutes aren't posted yet, but you can listen to the whole thing here (remove spaces after http:) http: //parlvu.parl.gc.ca/ParlVu/ContentEntityDetailView.aspx?lang=en&ContentEntityId=11650 The main things I took away: 1) The "intent to reside" requirement is poorly worded, the...
