Toronto Neighbourhood Best Place For Work and Life ?

Don't know how you're going to survive, quite honestly. We have friends who live in a tiny basement and pay $800 a month. If minimum wage in a "survival job" is $10.25 and you work 8 hours a day, you get about $410 a week. After tax, you might be lucky to come away with $350 a week. After...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

Been interesting responses! Many people have indicated that they are prepared to take survival jobs in order to succeed here. Now, don't get me wrong, but it has been my personal experience that this can be a career killer. It's one thing to be take a job which might be a level or so below...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

Interesting replies to my original posting! At the end of the day, I would never say to anyone "don't come here", but I do believe that most people who land here are going to get a major shock. My impression is that there are many people out there still waiting for their visas who have a...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

"Korean guy", everyone who firsts lands here is positive about their future life in Canada. Everyone is prepared to work hard and make a go of it. However, the reality seems to be completely different. Nobody can tell me that after we've been here 10 months and are continuing to get kicked in...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

I agree that hard work and attitude count for a lot. The problem is that the average Canadian doesn't give a stuff about you and how hard you're prepared to work. We have met people who are born here and they're struggling to get anywhere in their industry. My Canadian-born next door neighbour...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

To thebeast184/Rod, it seems like you're still waiting on your visa - since you don't live here yet, please don't presume to give advice to those of us who do! We're allowed to find things disappointing, ridiculous, uncertain and messed up because we've been through the whole process, arrived...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

Thank you all for your replies to my post. For those who wanted to know why we left Australia, the reason is complex. We have more family here in Canada (Toronto specifically) than in Australia and we are in a different stage in our lives, being in our early 40's. We still love Australia very...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

Hi Explorer101, I disagree that Canadians would be disappointed in Australia. The reason is their entirely different mentality. Australians like to "give a fair go" and their way of thinking is much more open-minded and honest. I never realised this until we came to Canada and have experienced...

Been here almost a year, Canada not so great

I wrote a number of previous posts before moving here in 2010 from Australia. At the time we were very excited to start living in North America and were looking forward to new opportunities. As a person who has lived in 5 different countries in my lifetime, I can now honestly say that I am...

    Stupid beauracrats!

Hi Fariza, I understand what you're saying, however - we could not wait around in Canada until our PR cards came. My husband only got his at the beginning of March and there was no way we could stay in Toronto from December to March as he still had work commitments and our son still had to...

    Stupid beauracrats!

We got our visas last year and made our initial landing in Toronto in December. We have returned home temporarily to see to the sale of our house. Anyway, my husband got his PR card within a few weeks, but my son and I have been waiting and waiting. Last week my family member in Toronto got a...

Recently landed - our experiences in Toronto

Thanks jnathan for your comment. Whilst I do agree that Canada has more unemployment, I did mention earlier that we are at a different stage in our lives and it is not the job/money factor which has influenced us. Family and lifestyle are the biggest motivators for us. We have not decided if my...

Recently landed - our experiences in Toronto

Thanks all, fernendez, the people at the airport were friendly and helpful. Most of the formalities were done within 10 minutes, except for the customs part which I mentioned before. kchakus, the housing plots are very small. Most of the suburban ones we saw had the houses packed together...

Recently landed - our experiences in Toronto

Hi all, we recently did our landing in Toronto. Everything was quite smooth at the airport, although it took a while for the Customs agent to go through the "Goods accompanying" and "Goods to Follow" lists. We had to have two lists as we have returned to Australia to sell our home and finish...

    Bringing Jewellery

HI, I've been reading in this forum about declaring jewellery when landing. I have a dozen pieces or so - some of which I will be taking when I do my initial landing next week and some which will be in my goods to follow a few months later. The pieces range in value from a few hundred $$$ and...

    area of jews in toronto

If you are already going with hatred in your heart, you will not succeed in Canada. You may even land up employed by a Jewish person and you may not even know it. There is no place for this rubbish in the modern day world, in a first world country. Better to stay where you are - you will not...

i do not like living in canada

You can't move to a first world country and expect to get stuff for nothing or not be expected to contribute in a significant way to maintain the standard of the society you have now chosen to live in. Housing is very expensive in the Canadian cities - all you have to do is look up a housing...

    ********LANDING FEES*********

Don't worry too much. We did our medicals and then a few weeks later we were asked for the final fees along with our passports. I think they don't want people to go to all the hassle of getting the final fees prepared if they still have to review your medicals first.

    Got it.....!

Hi CanadaFrenzy. I can't remember the exact cost, but I think it was about $250 Australian Dollars for the adult medical exam plus about $150 for our child plus another $90 approx per adult for the X-rays (children under 11 don't need x-rays) We were 2 adults, 1 child so I think the total...
