The law as it relates to drivers licenses

Well that's probably true, Leon. Of course, changing over the license may cause problems when driving back to the States (also I believe I'd have to have the old plates taken off my car there). See, I've been told several different things each time I've asked this question of the authorities...

The law as it relates to drivers licenses

OK, that makes sense....but when do you really need to switch the license? The people I've spoken with seem to be a bit ambiguous about when you have to do it. From what you are saying, Leon, it sounds as though I could change it over any time before a three year period and still get credit...

The law as it relates to drivers licenses

I am not clear on the law in Canada as it relates to drivers licenses for permanent residents. I have been informed by the Ministry of Transportration that if you want to drive in Ontario, you need to switch your foreign drivers license to an Ontario one within two months of residing here. Of...

Not finding work and renewing PR card

Well that is officially the case, yes. But if a PR doesn't find a job, it is more difficult to prove that he/she has actually been residing here. Obviously bank statements and other receipts help, but a job is probably the most definitive proof that one has really been living continuously in...

Not finding work and renewing PR card

I received PR status in Canada under the Skilled worker class, but like many immigrants, I'm finding it very tough to get a job. I'm aware of the PR obligations in terms of the two out of five year residency rule. But what I am really concerned about is this: If I am unable to find work, will...

Drivers license issues...moving to different provinces

The need to switch drivers licenses to Ontario (or all of Canada) is mandatory within 2-3 months from the time you settle, apparently. But what if you have settled in a province like Ontario, but are not sure if you want to settle permanantly in that province? As long as you don't drive, is it...

Need advice on tracking/logging procedures for PR status

I recently asked the immigration official in Canada if it would be a good idea to have my passport stamped each time I enter the country just so I can have proof of entry for resident status, and he said yes. However, I will have to return to the States probably once a month to check on my...

Problems with ID when exchanging drivers' licenses

Ok thanks, Baloo. Maybe I'll give this a try. Or maybe I just won't drive for awhile. Thanks again. ;D

Problems with ID when exchanging drivers' licenses

Well in theory that is true. Still, in the "post 9-11" world of paranoia, authorities have the tendency to ask for numerous forms of ID, and the drivers license is the one most commonly asked for, at least in the States. Is there some way around the drivers license exchange?

Problems with ID when exchanging drivers' licenses

I realize I should be living in Canada, but I have to maintain bank accounts in the US, as do many immigrants. Often they expect drivers licenses to be used as forms of ID.

Problems with ID when exchanging drivers' licenses

I am quite concerned about the fact that someone living in Ontario has to surrender their NJ drivers license. The problem is that in the US, banks (and many other institutions) often ask for drivers license as proof of identity. So if you need to return to the States and use local banks...

Asking immigration officers to stamp your passport

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to ask the immigration officers to stamp your passport at the border. The reason I ask is because often, they don't bother to do this, especially if you are traveling by car. I would think that it would be advantageous to have your passport stamped by...

    Chances of Wining H&C appeal

Re: Should I have the immigration officers stamp amy passport? I went through the landing procedure and received PR status in May 2008, whereupon I spent about ten days in Canada and then returned home. I am carefully looking at the number of days to maintain the PR status, and I am planning...
