Hi all,

I already created a thread about being new to driving and to Canada's driving license system, but this topic would be different.

I just passed my G1 today and looking at June 2019 to go for the G2 drive test.

Still have a year to go, so I would like to avoid taking driving classes right now and perhaps finish the classes by end of 2018 - so I might forget how to drive by the time June 2019 comes.

Ideally I would like to start my driving lessons around January of February 2019 - so I can make it smoothly to June 2019.

> Did other new comers take driving lessons in winter? Is it a good thing to do/not too difficult?

> Once you get the G1, how do you gain driving experience? Mainly with driving schools or have you thought of renting a car and having a friend with full G license as a passenger?

Would appreciate any advice,

Thanks
Mat

Personally, either a winter driving class or, even better if you can do it, an ice racing school. No actual contact or racing, but you do get to test the limits of driving even more than you do in a winter driving class. Before she started driving in Canada, my wife took the ice race school here. She got to experience exactly what happens when you lose control, how it feels to end up stuck in a snow bank and driving in very poor visibility. Worth every penny of the $125.00.

Classes might be worth it, but the biggest secret of driving in winter is to not panic behind the wheel. things happen, so just keep a cool head. If you skid through an intersection, use your horn. If you start skidding in general just stay calm and attempt to retain control. Don't pump brakes. Stand on them to stop sooner. Winter tires are essential. Good luck
