Hi everyone,

I want to renew my PR card

My situation:
  • Landing date (COPR/PR card): October 11, 2021
  • PR card expires: October 19, 2026
  • I left Canada on November 10, 2021 and stayed outside Canada until October 25, 2024.
  • I returned to Canada on October 25, 2024 and have been in Canada continuously since then, with no trips outside the country
when would be the best time to submit the application?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

I calculated it based on the dates you provided, u should reach approximately 730 days on October 24, 2026, assuming they remain continuously in Canada. Since your PR card expires October 19, the card expiry itself does not mean your PR status expires.

Thanks everybody for your responses

I’m about to submit my application for renewal.

I have a problem in uploading the photo!
I have consistently got this error!

Warning: Your photo does not meet the following requirements:

Brightness: Your photo may be too bright or too dark.

It is encouraged that you edit the photo using the photo editing tool or upload a new photo that meets all requirements. If you cannot edit the photo, an IRCC agent can do so on your behalf when reviewing your case file. The IRCC agent will then deem your photo acceptable / unacceptable for your PR card.

I have tried to make the photo brighter and darker both! But still the same error!

Do you have any idea what is the problem?!

Try using the original photo without extra editing, with even lighting and a plain white background. Sometimes the portal’s automatic checker flags photos incorrectly. If it still fails, consider getting a new photo from a professional photographer or uploading it if the portal allows you to proceed, since IRCC says an officer may assess it manually.

Hi everyone,

I keep hearing conflicting claims about this, so I wanted to confirm here.

When you renew your PR card for another 5 years, does your physical presence history from before the renewal get wiped out, meaning you’d have to start building a fresh 3-year (1,095-day) history for citizenship from the renewal date forward?
Or does IRCC simply look at a rolling 5-year window ending on the date you submit your citizenship application, counting all physical presence days within that window regardless of when your PR card was renewed?

From what I’ve researched, it seems to be the latter (rolling window, no reset), but I’d appreciate confirmation from people who’ve been through this.

Thank you!

It's on a five-year rolling basis, always looking back five years from the relevant date (eg of examination/interaction, date of citizenship app, etc). You don't lose any days by changing PR card or indeed not having one. You do lose them when they fall outside that five year window.

PR card renewal and citizenship eligibility are two separate processes. You must have at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada during that period, along with meeting the other eligibility requirements. The citizenship calculation is based on the applicable five-year period before you apply,

Looking for people in the same situation – Protected Person PR Application (Canada)
Hi everyone,
I am looking for anyone who has a similar situation with their Protected Person PR application in Canada.
Here is my timeline:
  • PR application received by IRCC: April 2025.
  • Eligibility: Passed.
  • Criminality: Passed.
  • Background/security check: Still in progress.
  • CV/Resume requested by IRCC: August 2026 (submitted before the deadline).
  • Wife and children's biometrics and medicals: Completed in June 2026.
  • Pre-arrival letter: Received.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone in a similar situation.
My questions:
  1. Has anyone received a CV or resume request from IRCC for background/security screening?
  2. After submitting the CV, how long did you wait for your PR decision?
  3. Did your security screening take several months or more than a year?
  4. Has anyone received PR approval while their dependants were outside Canada?
  5. Did anyone with eligibility and criminality passed but security still in progress receive their PR recently?
  6. Does receiving a CV request mean the application has entered an extended security screening, or is it a normal background-check procedure?
Please share your timeline and experience. I would really appreciate hearing from people in the same situation.
Thank you!
