It seems you’re working and earning, if that’s the case, your lawyer will inform you to get in touch with the Ontario aid department that you should have your account canceled with them and that he’s willing to take up with your case and he has to deal with you directly, as soon as that’s done, then he’s gonna make you known the amount you have to pay. When you both agreed, if will make finalization on case and will let you know as soon as you a hearing date is set for you. He wouldn’t want you to send your evidence yet since the hearing date isn’t out yet. Once all of this are both agreeable by you two, you gonna get your hearing date

Hey guys! Here’s my timeline

Dec 20, 2024- inland claim
Jan 8th, 2025- Referal decision got my brown paper and work permit
Jan 16th 2025- Biometrics
Apr 17th 2025- Background check

After this no updates. My work permit expires on Jan 8th 2027 and i’m working right now. How the work permit renewal works if my hearing won’t come before that. Also i got legal aid to get a lawyer and my lawyer wasn’t really try with my case and didn’t ask for my evidence should i worry about my evidence and try to file it now or i need to file it when i get the notice of hearing. She says legal aid give minimum hours and i remember she told me when hearing comes it’s gonna be $4000. No update from her since. Is it common with you guys or can i change my lawyer mid processing. She doesn’t even bother to tell me what’s going to happen and i have my IRCC portal. I don’t know about IRB portal. If i try to ask update can i just call IRB to get updated or is there caseworker in IRB assigned to me that i only need to call them. And i made my claim 3 months after i landed in Canada, do you think it’s gonna effect bad. I’m stressing over the hearing day by day and can’t even sleep now. I’m really lost in a process, i would really appreciate if someone helps me understand the process. Lastly, good luck for everyone with your cases!

You're not required to and shouldn't wait until you have a hearing date to send in your evidence. The IRB schedules claims based on a number of factors, including but not limited to claim readiness. Not sending in your evidence can result in your claim not being heard for longer. Additionally, when IRB is considering whether your claim is less-complex or not, they will look at your evidence if available. When you send in your evidence early, your claim may be processed earlier, less-complex or not.

Well, you still shouldn't be advising/stating things like "He wouldn’t want you to send your evidence yet since the hearing date isn’t out yet." That is fundamentally wrong when it comes to the refugee claim process with IRB hearings.
Always approach immigration lawyers with caution, because from what I saw in this forum and from people I know, a lot of immigration lawyers are just out to make a buck instead of actually helping with immigration matters. A lot of people I personally knew got screwed over by immigration lawyers, and if you read posts in this forum you will see that it's a big problem that isn't contained. A lot of them straight up give bad/incorrect advice for even the simplest things, where the correct information is one simple google search away and is clearly stated on IRB and IRCC websites.

I applied here in Alberta back in April,2024 and I don't have any updates yet. I am currently waiting for the background check.

Upon communication with the IRB, the problem is in my FESS and they cannot do anything till they get it from CBSA and IRCC

Sent a couple of ATIP for the notes from the CBSA and CSIS on January 2025 and August 2025, and never heard back from

I applied here in Alberta back in April,2024 and I don't have any updates yet. My file went to less complex, and then they scheduled a regular hearing for me. I am still waiting for the background check, which is in process.

I applied for asylum at the end of 2024 and received a less complex case. I submitted my evidence in August 2025, and about a month later, I received another letter stating that the IRB is no longer considering my case as less complex and that I must attend a regular hearing. Since then, there have been no updates. My lawyer says that many people with similar cases are receiving decisions without a hearing, and that the IRB can make a decision on a case-by-case basis without holding a hearing. Has anyone gone through a similar situation? Thanks.
