Baby is a citizen by birth: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...s/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship.html

The child will get citizenship by birth.
My ex-husband got here in Canada as a PR holder, and he became a Canadian Citizen later. But my baby was born in my country before I got my PR.
However, we applied for my child's citizenship while we were in my country, and it was approved. As a result, my baby received citizenship from birth. And he got his Canadian passport also when we were in my country.

Just to make it clear.

If your husband was born outside Canada and naturalized in Canada later, then baby is by default Canadian citizen even if baby is born OUTSIDE Canada. Now if your husband was born outside and if he got his citizenship from his father who was a naturalized Canadian citizen (your father in law), then your father in law passed the citizenship to his son (your husband )through descent. Meaning your husband was born outside and did not live in Canada, but received it through your FIL. In such case, your son if born outside Canada cannot get Canadian citizenship . This was the citizenship law till now.....Hope its clear.

But now Bill C-3 got royal assent on Nov 19, 2025, so now even if your husband is born outside Canada and got citizenship via descent from your father in law, your son who is born outside Canada can get Canadian citizenship. Just we have to wait for enforcement date. But in this case, your husband has to live in Canada for 1095 days in his lifetime, then only baby will get Canadian citizenship.

Hey
I am canadian citixen and my wife pr file is in process and in between the process my child is born.Today i received the letter from ircc that you have to apply for child citizenship certificate to complete the process.
NOTE: If your child resides outside Canada and the United States, the application for Canadian citizenship
should be submitted to the Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate closest to where your child
resides. The processing will be delayed if you submit your child’s application directly to the Case Processing
Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
My question is whether i have to apply through paper or online?
