I wrote current date and then attached a letter of explanation just to be on the safer side, got my work permit hard copy today in the mail. one year extesion
A little confused about what you meant here please. And when did you submitted application for the extension? How long it took to receive hard copy?

Quick question: I applied for work permit renewal on Oct 19th, received extension email on 20th. Can I use the extension letter to extend/renew of Social insurance number or do I just present it to my employer pending approval/issuance of my work permit?

You can try but last time i went to renew SIN based on my work permit extension letter and they refused to renew, they asked to bring the original hardcopy. Secondly it depends on the employer too, I heard some employer accept the extension but some employers ask for SIN renewal too

You can not use the extension to renew the SIN. Once you receive the hard copy, you can renew the SIN.

It seems like the extension is more like written confirmation of maintained status or implied status. Since on implied status you can't renew your SIN; while you can keep working for your current employer you can't change employers (as you won't be able to prove that you have a valid unexpired SIN).

You do not need any new medical information to renew if you are not working in healthcare or childcare. Always selected NO to these options. I renewed my WP twice, and neither time did I require any medical or additional documents.
Hi
When I selected NO it doesn't let me proceed with wp extension application. What could I be doing wrong. Please help.

What message does it show after you select NO? The message that it gives when it prevents you from proceeding?

You're allowed to apply via paper instead of online if the online application is not working,

> You can only apply on paper if you’re in 1 of the following situations: There’s a problem with the online application.

Also, what country are you from? It might be because your from a country that Canada always requires a medical exam from, e.g. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...temporary-residents/country-requirements.html

Finally, have you ever taken a medical exam before? If yes, you might be able to just include a copy of the old one, since there's a temporary public policy saying that these are good for five years now,

It says below
A medical exam is needed for foreign nationals who claim refugee protection in Canada.

Medical exam results must be received before a study or work permit application can be processed.

Based on your answers, you cannot submit an online application at this time.

My country of origin is India

I took medical exam in 2023 which i have with me that's still valid??

Lastly my work permit expires in May 2026. What would be good time to apply for extension .

Thank you so much for all your help .

Ahh, that's why. India is one of the countries where a medical exam is always required as per the earlier link.

Yes, as per the other link about the temporary public policy, your medical exam should be good for five years. Assuming you got it on Jan 1, 2023 it's counted as good until Jan 1, 2028. Adjust these dates based on when you actually got it .. but I think you can answer yes to the questions and submit the old medical along with a copy of the temporary public policy (here's the link again https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...eements/public-policies/excempt-ime-2024.html ) and that should get you going.

Hmm, when I check https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...vices/application/check-processing-times.html it says 227 days for the work permit. So now may be a bit too early.

The gov't official recommendation is just 30 days early as per https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/extend/apply.html

> You should apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires.

That being said, most advice I've seen online is to submit around 4 months before the old work permit expires.
