There aren't many threads concerning voluntarily leaving Canada for protected persons (accepted claim), so I'd appreciate your answer.

If a protected person (accepted claim) wants to voluntarily cease status, where should the person go ? CBSA or IRCC ?

Also, will he be returned his expired passport ? Otherwise how will the renewal process be done ?

Thank you.

Hi, in my experience there's no undoing the historical fact that someone made a claim to Convention refugee status in Canada and received it.

If someone wants to reacquire their citizenship and return to their country then no one will impede that - farewell, and good-bye - but no one will undo what's been done.

A person can retrieve their seized passport or get a new one and travel outbound from Canada unfettered.

Bon Voyage and good luck.

There's no voluntary denouncing refugee status, you can make your own arrangement and Leave. You'll be re-availing and they will cease your status.

Thanks for your replies. I wanted to know where the person should go to get back their expired passport, i.e., CBSA or IRCC ? I did not find any option for appointment online.

Also, since it is expired, will they give it to the claimant for renewal or will the Canadian office try to send it to the country's embassy for renewal ?

You can request returning of your passports, and apply for travel document from your country's embassy. IRCC seized your document, and i guess should be first contact to retrieve.

It depends on which agency seized your passport. If you applied at a port of entry or an inland CBSA office, it will be the CBSA. If you applied at an inland IRCC office or online, it will be the IRCC.

Two possibilities. If CBSA knows you are planning on leaving Canada and renouncing protected person status they may want to meet you at the airport to give back your passport on the way out of the country. Given that is an expired passport no real need to give it to you at the airport so would contact your local CBSA office and arrange a pick-up. You should research what is required to obtain valid travel documents from your home country while in Canada and whether it is possible. If a passport can’t be obtained a temporary travel document may be an option. It depends on the country. It can take quite a while to obtain a new passport while abroad from some countries so apply early.

Thanks for your reply. Since the claim was submitted inland to IRCC Toronto, I assume they will return the passport as mentioned above?

Do you know how long it is expected to take for them to arrange the pick up ?

The country does issue passports in 4 weeks and travel permits in a few days but they require expired passports for both.

Hi, I am on same boat, I contacted every where and no luck, later i went to st clair irb office and got this number, Call this number (416) 952-0708 and told themI a protected person and willing to return back. If they say contact ircc or irb or cbsa airport, simply tell them you inquire all and no positive feedback , thats why you call this number, after i called them , they ask my uci and details and purpose, simple answer want to return my country and my passport expired and don't know which office have this, They checked into system and order my documents from different offices. It will take estimated 7 days to bring my documents to their office. After that they will call me and said for next procedure. They said CBSA airport office will return my passport. Now i am waiting for their reply from st clair irb office.
