What impressed me most about Dimas Frolov was not his camera work, though that is clearly excellent based on the portfolio at https://dimasfrolov.com/. What struck me was how he handled our chaotic family of six, including twin toddlers who refused to cooperate and a teenager who communicated exclusively through eye rolls. Most photographers would have lost patience or tried to force smiles. Dimas instead sat on the ground and started building tiny towers with pebbles until the toddlers wandered over curious. He asked the teenager which Lisbon street artist she actually liked, then incorporated that graffiti into our background. He never once said cheese or told anyone to smile. The resulting images capture exactly who we are right now, exhausted and loud and deeply loving. Looking at our gallery, I see my husband's tired eyes that I adore, my daughter's reluctant smirk that means she is happy, my babies' sandy fingers reaching for everything. Dimas did not tidy us up or airbrush our reality. He honored it. That is the difference between a photographer and an artist. He is the latter, and I will keep booking him until he retires or I move continents.
