hey guys,

so i have my oath on feb 14th and apparently they will ask me to cut my PR card during the ceremony. thing is, im traveling on march 19 and will need my card.

otherwise i have to wait for citizenship certificate to arrive in the mail (which i see could take up to 2 weeks), and then maybe do an urgent/express passport application (anecdotal evidence says first passport application cannot be expressed?)

if i tell them during oath, will they let me keep the PR card for travel?
i want to take the oath and not disrupt/delay the oath just because i have to travel - who knows with covid what other headaches might come my way. i dont want to regret later and say what people say "should have never delayed the oath!" lol

Not sure how long it takes to receive the certificate and apply for a passport during covid times, but regarding your PR card question : The PR card is only for PRs, which you won't be the minute you become a citizen, so no, you can't keep it nor use it for your flight...

A post / thread I read here spoke about Oath to Passport in 72 hours or something to that effect. You may want to check that and/or reach out to OP to see if you could replicate that.

You can wait to apply for passport when you will come back. As you can use your citizenship certificate as proof of citizen when you will re-enter.

I’m in the same situation, oath March 2, travel date March 31. But I intend on attending the oath, talk to them see if I can get certificate faster, and then apply express or urgent( depending on when I get certificate) for passport. My friend applied urgent for passport, got it next business day. So I’m not sure where you got that information from. Goodluck to us both haha!

If your travel is not urgent, I would postpone it. There is a good chance you won't be able to get your passport on time. Your PR card is invalid the minute you swear the oath.

What is classified as urgent travel?
Urgent to you. If there is no family medical emergency or something similar, then I assume you can postpone it to take the oath first and obtain your passport second. Otherwise you have to reschedule the oath.

that's what im thinking too. in the oath invitation letter tho, they ask us to email them about travel if this is an issue - my concern is i email them and then what if they tell me "well then, we're postponing you... umm, actually, let us get back to you" and then say "september 2022 is the earliest we can do" lol

also i dont think getting the passport will be the problem. its the citizenship certificate thats the variable - what if canada post delays it?
but lets say, it all goes fine and i receive the certificate much sooner - then what if i go to the passport office for urgent application and they say "sorry you're way too fresh off the oven, we need the full time of 30 days to process this... urgent is only for renewals"

I have not received my oath letter yet, but I think it’s possible. You should read the link shared above. If you’re not feeling confident I would email them.
