I have been in canada for the past 2 months and got married last october. Can i still go ahead and sponsor my wife, even if i am currently unemployed and looking for job opportunities.

Yes you can but you should update your file as soon as you find employment.

Are you suggesting to file for the PR for my spouse now and then update the file as soon as i find employment, so the process is started. Would that be an issue if i update the file later.

submit the application.

after you have received a new job, send a webform with new employment proof (employment letter/pay stubs/etc.)
 
In most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse or partner or dependent child. You only need to show that you have enough money to meet the income requirements if:

  • you’re sponsoring a dependent child that has 1 or more dependent children of their own, or
  • you’re sponsoring a spouse or partner that has a dependent child, and their dependent child has 1 or more children of their own.
 
In most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse or partner or dependent child. You only need to show that you have enough money to meet the income requirements if:

  • you’re sponsoring a dependent child that has 1 or more dependent children of their own, or
  • you’re sponsoring a spouse or partner that has a dependent child, and their dependent child has 1 or more children of their own.

There isn’t a specific income requirement but you must show how you will be able to support your family without government help.
