Hi @CaBeaver

I am in a similar situation but a different dates:

My eligibility period: November 4, 2016 till November 4, 2021
Active Passport: October 2, 2016 till October 1, 2026
Expired Passport: March 5, 2007 till March 4, 2017 but since, I got a new passport (aka i renewed it early) on October 2, 2016 - this old passport should have expired on October 2, 2016 technically (since the embassy puts a cancelled stamp on it). Should I mention this expired passport or not? Do you understand what I mean? Would much appreciate your help!

This is what the instructions guide says

Tell us if you have held passports or travel documents during your five (5) year eligibility period.

  • Check either yes or no.
      1. If you check yes, complete the chart Type your valid passport or travel document number exactly as shown on the document. Make sure there is no space between each number or letter.
      2. Select the name of the country or territory that issued your passport or travel document (issuing authority)
      3. the place (city or town) the document was issued
      4. the date the document was issued
      5. the expiry date of the document. Leave blank if there is no expiry date.
    • If you do not have a passport or travel document that was/is valid during your five (5) year eligibility period, tell us why in the explanation box.
Since the first passport was cancelled on Oct 2, 2016, it was no longer valid for travel before your eligibility period started. So, I wouldn't mention it.

Hi @CaBeaver Thanks for your response. It doesnt say any date of cancellation on it but the embassy put a Passport Cancelled stamp on it so this is my assumption that it was considered cancelled on that date October 2, 2016. Do you think I am right in thinking that way?

Also, much appreciate your response! Where can I find the guide?

The date you received the new one, the old one was no longer valid. The issuance date of the new passport is a proof when the old one was cancelled. That's what I would do, just mention the new one. Here is the link for the guide

Thanks @CaBeaver You are awesome!
I have another question:
I have US F1 stufent visa issued on April 20,2014 and expiry on April 19, 2019 but I entered the US on August 29, 2014 and left on August 30, 2019

similarly for my H1B work visa the issue date is Nov 19, 2018 and expiry isMay 18, 2021 but I entered on Jan 5, 2019 and left on actually march 6, 2019.

Under ques - that asks for immigration or citizenship status - what dates should i put for student and work entries? Is it the dates actually printed on the visa or the entry and exit dates?

Again from the guide

Tell us if you have had immigration, permanent resident status and/or citizenship in any other country outside of Canada (e.g. your country of birth)

  • Check either yes or no.
  • If you check yes, complete the chart.
  • Tell us which countries you have held status in, and exactly what status you held or currently hold (student, employment/worker, refugee/protected person, permanent resident or citizen).
  • Date you obtained each status(YYYY-MM-DD)
  • End date if no longer valid, if applicable (YYYY-MM-DD). Leave blank if you currently hold this status
You enter when your statuses were issued, and their expiry date (since both are invalid now), not when you entered and exited the US for each status.
