Hi everyone,

My father-in-law is coming to visit me and my family soon and I was wondering if anyone knows here if whether he, as a visitor, could decline the stay at a government-authorized hotel for 3-day quarantine. We booked him an Airbnb for two weeks and would like him to stay and do his 14-day quarantine there. He's actually fully vaccinated and we don't want to pay up to $2K for his stay at a hotel. In Montreal, the police doesn't fine travellers for refusing to follow a 3-day hotel quarantine, as it seems.

Has anyone had an experience with your family members visiting you in Canada similar to mine? I'd greatly appreciate your responses.

wow you are really gonna find a way around it? you refuse to pay $2k but not afraid to get fine of $5k if you get caught? ArriveCan app has ways of finding if you are not following the quarantine requirement and part is that is the MANDATORY hotel quarantine, and it doesnt matter if you get vaccinated from your home country or not.

What do you mean "get caught"? My understanding is you inform of your refusal to stay at a hotel and tell the customs border officer that you'll pay a fine instead.

So he's okay with paying five thousand instead of the hotel cost?

Don't know where you heard that Montreal police don't fine. They might not. Or didn't much at the beginning. But all indications are it's gotten more strict.

Note the hotel costs are actually much less than two thousand. The announcement was up to two thousand. Check actual hotel rates.

Seems kind of ...stupid. But there's no absolute prohibition on that either.

You realize that by informing CBSA he won’t follow quarantine orders, they can simply deny him entry until they can send him back on the next available flight? Failure to follow a lawful order doesn’t just mean a fine for someone with no entry right to Canada, it means possible (and quite probably) removal. Not sure that’s the sensible choice to make.

Good lord ,
You do realize your FIL does not have the legal right to enter the country , correct ?
I can’t believe things these days , and I’ve been around the block in life .
Hope your FIL does that , and they send him packin.
The sense of entitlement

lol he thought maybe the fine is still $750 only, not realizing it has gone up to $5000 because people are trying to outsmart the system

Simple answer. He can skip quarantine but needs to be prepared to pay the $5,000 fine.

Not sure how Mandatory quarantine can be skipped by a visitor. And keep in mind, there is also the possibility of arrest and imprisonment, not just a fine.

If your FIL really wants to save money, he can just not travel to Canada while the mandatory quarantine is in place.

The quarantine is in place not to protect him, but to protect Canadians.

Wow! Why are you guys so triggered?! OMG, you sound like you have to pay a fine for my FIL out of your pocket, geez...

I thought you guys were more in the know about the topic than I hope you'd be.

First, where did I hear about Montreal police not issuing fines? There it is https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/quebec-...or-people-refusing-hotel-quarantine-1.5417292

Second, some of you mix up the HOTEL quarantine and 14-day SELF-quarantine at home upon arrival. I was not asking about the latter, I was asking about the former. I hope it's clear to you now. If not, please Google it to understand the difference and get educated on the matter.

Third, my FIL DOES have the legal right to entry, again you're misinforming the crowd here because you have no clue. Read here https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...ravel-restrictions-exemptions.html#citizen-pr. If you don't know, then I recommend you refrain from commenting on the matter.

Fourth, I'm not here to be lectured by people who know less than I know about the matter. If you have nothing to say on point and instead are losing your s**t because of my FIL, then I'm sure you have something better to do.

Oh, also, to you cheerleaders of the mandatory HOTEL quarantine, here's an interesting article to read https://www.cicnews.com/2021/06/can...nd-says-covid-19-panel-0618252.html#gs.34up30

“I'd greatly appreciate your responses.”

So what you really meant was you appreciated any response that supported you and your FIL efforts to breach current Canadian laws.

No, what I was expecting is a civil discussion without judgments and resentment towards my post. Some people here took it as far as to say I want my FIL to flout mandatory HOME quarantine. WTF?! People need to calm down and read my post again and more carefully. I don't need any responses to support my post, I need responses talking about a SIMILAR experience and if it was a good or bad idea or if it was POSSIBLE or IMPOSSIBLE to decline the 3-day hotel stay in the first place. I don't need to be lectured here, I've done my homework and I'm fully aware about the increase in fines to 5K.

What I take away from what you are asking is that you want to bypass the mandatory 3 night hotel and do 14 days of self isolation alone. I don't have an answer for you but I worry that if your FIL is not a PR or citizen, the border agent has the discretion to send him back to the UK, and may do just that if he refuses. The people accepting the fines who are banking on no fine for refusal, are most likely already Canadian citizens or permanent residents, so they can't be kicked out of Canada for that.

Logically, it would seem that quarantining directly from the airport to an airbnb is safer to the public than stuffing many people into a bus or van, trucking them to a hotel together, potentially infecting each other. Also, it's been reported that they are putting more than one person in a room at a time. Seems counter-productive to me.

I am in a similar situation. My GF is coming in 3 weeks via Toronto, then to Edmonton. Our hope was to do the entire quarantine in my home. I live by myself, I work from home, and have been vaccinated.

Hopefully in the coming weeks the government makes a change to the mandatory hotel stay. It is much more a punishment rather than a safety measure, IMO. It also puts additional financial and emotional strain, especially when you have already been apart from loved ones for so long already.

You shouldn't be quarantining with her. That goes against the current quarantine requirements. This is one of the problems with the system. Many are quarantining with non-travelers. At least you are hopefully not planning on leaving your home but many have decided that if people also remain at home for the quarantine period (although they should technically be staying for 14 days not 11 even if this was allowed) this is an acceptable way to quarantine. Unfortunately people also do this and some family members also leave the home.
