(Discussion) DM Without Interview

It is almost certainly majority of applicants reporting on the tracker would have an interview before receiving DM status on ECAS. This is the case before switching to online events, and to a degree to those who reported they had interviews via phone or Microsoft Teams.

Some responses in other posts confirmed it seems to be common now application status would change to DM without having interviews.

I figured that we open a new post to discuss this so we can verify the new scenario that could be now the typical procedure.

There’s no real logic to this.. from what I’ve seen on this forum; if they have not done language and residency checks yet you will most likely get an interview (mostly from Scarborough) and if they have completed your language and residency you’ll go to DM straight.

I think it's explained in the links they provided with the citizenship test invite.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/citizenship-test/next.html

After the test
If you pass the test
You may have to do an interview with a citizenship officer.

  • If you do, we’ll contact and schedule you for an interview.
  • If you do not have to do an interview, please wait for us to invite you to your citizenship ceremony.

Red text mine for emphasis.

The point of the interview *is* to assess language and residency. Just not sure what the criteria may be for being exempt from the interview, but likely if you have a simple enough (or zero) travel history during the residency period.

Going straight to DM without interview also can be frustrating , you have no officer to talk to and you’ll never know when and how long till oath. In our case we got DM and there’s no interview , but now Mississauga office stopped oath completely , we wish we had an interview so at least we can ask an officer what’s going on. Now just silence

Going straight to decision made means your paperwork is straight. That's my own opinion...
Most people make mistakes with the dates when they traveled. Sometimes some others details on the application make IRCC curious. That's why the officer always request some documents on the interview. Most of the time, passport stamps are what they are looking for.
To me, there is nothing wrong with going straight to decision made.

Valid point. In my case, I had RQ-lite prior to knowledge test which was basically to provide copies of passports pages. It wasn’t that long to get things moving until the knowledge test and then about 11 days later DM status.

Not really I had my interview on last Thursday the officer asked me to show my pr card, asked me when I travelled outside the country and told me she knows a lot of people with my surname and asked me to wait for an oath invite. Requested 0 documents and the whole interview took 4 mins

Yeah I think it varies between applicants, offices. But my guess would be to expedite the process to handle the backlog

Do we know the estimate time to wait after receiving DM status to get the oath invitation? A couple of weeks, months?

This is a very useful thread!
In my case we passed the test on Mar 28, 2021. I called to IRCC to verify the results on Apr 20, 2021 and got confirmation that test considered passed, background and security checked but language and residency are in process. No changes after that. Scarborough office.
Based on the common practice, I do expect an interview request, but no news so far.

It doesn't look there are a lot who just got DM status without an interview.

I thought to open this post to discuss it for any to provide input.

Basic question, what is DM? At which step does DM occur after and before?
DM is Decision Made. It happens after the validation of the test, if the applicant is not asked for an interview, or it happens after an interview if the applicant is called up for one. If the application is successful, the applicant will receive an invitation to attend the oath.

Thanks @Doda

You said DM happens if the applicant is not asked for an interview or after an interview. Does that mean not all applicants get an interview and the interview is at the discretion of IRCC?

@carl321 Can't help but notice the long wait between citizenship application and citizenship test in your timeline. You were just 3 months short of 2 years between application and test! Is this the normal timeline?
