My husband had gone to Canada in September 2019 with LMIA work permit. I want to apply for open work permit and want to take my kids along. One child is 19 will be joining college and junior one is 16 + and will need admission in 11th or 12th (as per the session he joins). Can you guide me if my both kids study permit and acceptance letter from the college/school before applying for visa?

For information The 19 year old although still a dependant would no longer be considered a minor child as age of majority depending on province would be 18 or 19.

The 19 year old will need to apply for a study permit and will have to pay international fees. Your other children can get TRV to study until the graduate grade 12.

As already explained, the 19 year old needs to apply for his own study permit to attend college. He will need to show $25k in funds, pay international tuition and show strong ties to his home country.

Thank you. So what do you suggest he (19 years old) should apply in separate application as one combined application may show that we are trying to shift there to settle that may result in rejection.

He would be visiting otherwise and there is no guarantee how long he can stay. He wouldn’t be able to work, study, access healthcare, etc.

Yes, he needs to apply separately. It has nothing to do with looking like you are all trying to settle. He cannot apply for a study permit with you. His app is entirely independent of yours.

Have a strong feeling that you may not have researched this plan and assumed you would move with your children and they would be able to go to college/university while paying domestic fees and without much hassle like children attending elementary and high school.

Just to add no idea how long the husbands permit is for but the 16+ year old as a temp resident will be faced with the same challenge once finished high school. Should they wish to stay and move onto college they will need to apply for a study permit and pay international fees, average 18000 cdn per year.

As previous post the children’s ages are not necessarily the best in terms of timing to move to Canada as temporary residents given one is already not considered a minor and the other is not far off.

That is what I am doing. Need to clear myself if they have to apply as international student or domestic student. Thank you

For university/college your children need to apply for study permits and pay international fees. So your 1st child must do this. Your second child will need to apply for a study permit later on this year if they are finishing grade 12 this year.
