Hi,

My husband and I will be applying for LMIA exempt work permit to work at a university for one year, provided we can show sufficient funds to support ourselves in Canada.
My husband will be funded by his current employer in our home country.
Meanwhile, my current employer will only give their decision whether they will be partially funding me, 1 month before we are due to go to Canada. Therefore, I will have to apply for a work permit before I know if I will get funding.
I have enough savings to show that I can support myself for one year, but it will be extremely tight.

My question is: once I have obtained the work permit and suddenly my current employer decides not to sponsor me, can I convert my work permit to a spouse visa?

If your husband is on a closed work permit, then yes, you should be able to obtain a spousal open work permit.
