Inland spouse - how long before spouse can travel?

I guess the title says it but I'm trying to figure out how long it would be before my spouse can return to visit their family back in their home country?

Inland spousal sponsorship gives applicants the ability to continue living in Canada while their application for permanent residence is processed. If the applicant’s temporary status document is not valid for the duration of the sponsorship processing period, they will need to apply for an extension, or a new status document, to maintain their legal status in Canada while their sponsorship application is being processed. Spousal sponsorship applications are processed within 12 months in the majority of cases. Traveling abroad while an inland sponsorship application is being processed is permitted, however, it is not recommended. In the event the sponsored person is denied re-entry into Canada for whatever reason, their sponsorship application may be deemed abandoned. If this happens, they will need to submit a new sponsorship application. If they are not legally residing in Canada, they will need to submit an outland spousal sponsorship application.

Your spouse can return at any time. Having said that, re-entery to Canada is never guaranteed. Also, your spouse would want to keep the trip relatively shortly (i.e. 3 weeks max). Inland requires the two of you to be cohabitating to Canada to qualify.

To re-enter Canada, your spouse will need a valid TRV or eTA.

Oh ok so it sounds like spouse is free to leave, but if they do, it's best for them to stay out of canada until the application is approved? because it says that trying to return while the application is in process might lead to the whole process ending (which would be bad!)

So if for some reason spouse needed to leave canada while ircc is processing our application, it's ok for them to stay in their home country until the process is approved? it's not very clear on the website if it's bad for spouse to leave and then stay in the other country when we get approved

No - definitely not. They must be living with you in Canada to qualify for the inland route. If they leave for a long period of time the inland application will be canceled. Trips need to be kept few and short.

You won't lose everything. You'll get the right of permanent residence fee refunded.
