Taking a 2 years diploma after completing a 4 years bachelor degree at a Canadian university!

Hello everyone,

So my situation is that I have a few part-time semesters during my study in university, so I am not confident that I could get a PGWP. I am asking if it is possible to take a 2 years diploma (not post graduate diploma) now, so I can get a 3 years PGWP even if I already completed my degree.

I did a bachelor degree in accounting and already completed it this summer. Now, I want to take 2 years diploma in Energy asset management at SAIT in Calgary to get to know the business side of the energy industry.

I heard that if you apply from outside of Canada, your study permit is likely to be refused because you can go backward with your study, but if you do it within Canada, CIC does not care about what you want to study nor what level.

The reason I cannot go for the Master degree in Accounting is because they only offer a 2 years study with a one year gap in between ( and CIC does not allow this). Basically, you do 2 consecutive summer semesters while working during September till May with no classes nor Co-op.

Also, is it true that 2 Post graduate diploma in 2 difference provinces might only get you 1 year of PGWP??

Please help me to clarify these things. I really appreciate you guys!!

Yes, you can do that and apply for a PGWP based only on your second program as you are ineligible based on your previous one. You still need to meet the requirements to extend your study permit. I'm sure you can find a full-time master's program in accounting.

Do you say that I can take the 2 years diploma?

Full-time master in accounting is only meant for people who are already employed and only take their time off in summer to study intensively for the CPA designation. I have looked in every single province in Canada, and it is the same everywhere.

No-one can here guarantee whether you will receive the extension or not. How IRCC acted in the past is no indication how they will act now, especially with post covid and all.

If the particular officer who looks at your application feels that your studies don't make sense then they have the power to deny you.

That is how I feel. I guess at the end of the day, it will be up to how well can I write my letter of explanation. Is it wise to bring up the fact that I studied part-time during my university's years, so I need to take another program now, or should I just shut up about it?

Please look into University of Saskatchewan , My UG is a major in Maths and a minor in Finance. I applied didn't make it here, they need UG credits in accounting..Which you do have.

Can't you find an applicable or related Master's program to do? If not straight up accounting then master of finance, or analytics. Here's one:

If doing a master degree just for the sake of PGWP, then its not worth it in my opinion especially when I am already pursuing CPA designation which trumps all master degrees in the field of Accounting. The energy and cost spent on a master degree that is not related to my field is not ideal for me.

So don't do it and find an employer willing to hire you with an LMIA or for a provincial nomination, or return to your home country.

No, I can always do the post graduate diplomas which is cheaper than a master, and I have been accepted into one recently already. I am just asking if a diploma will be equally accepted in my situation which I have stated in my first post.

2 year diploma gives 3 years pgwp so that isn't an issue but the only issue *may* be that your extension is denied
yes, that is actually my concern as well at the moment. I do have the medical proof for my reasons to study part-time though, and my Accounting classes grades are exceptional ( most of them are in the A range). But I will update you once I receive the result from my study permit application.
