Hello Guys,

I was laid off on 19-Mar-2020 because of Corona Virus Out break. I have applied for EI on 23-Mar-2020. My EI got approved and on last week I got 2 payments from Federal Government, $2,000/- as CERB and my EI. I haven't applied for CERB as those who applied for EI would be eligible for CERB as well.

Now I was told by my friend that I am eligible only for EI and I have to repay $2,000/-. Is that correct?

Please reply

Thanks

EI gets changed over to CERB. Strange that you didn’t sign up yet got the CERB Since it sounds like it has been converted.

Thanks for your reply. You mean I have to apply for CERB too? If I am not wrong when I applied for EI, I have automatically applied for CERB too.
Could you please let me know that whether I have to repay the $2,000 ? As my friend told me that I am eligible only for EI?
Thanks

I gues it automatically goes to CERB. Was under the impression you have to manually change over. Not you don’t need to repay the $2000 as long as you qualify for it and don’t return to work for 4 weeks.

You can't receive both EI and CERB. You will be required to pay one back.

Thanks a lot. But I never applied for CERB any way let the payments be in my Savings Account and when they asked to repay, I will be happily repaying.
Thanks
what did you actually receive? Might have misread and thought you got two 2K as EI. How much was your 2nd payment? CERB May be your better option.

I received $2,000/- and $1,126/- on the same day after I did the In-line reporting for EI and on both it’s mentioned as EI. But when I check my My Account page in CRA, it has mentioned $1,126/- as my EI (Bi-Weekly payment). In short, I got $2,000/- as CERB and $1,126/- as EI on the same day.

So yes you have incorrectly received CERB. You need to reach CRA.

No, they could do a post adjustment.
And you had enough insurable hours when you applied for EI ?

No,I didn’t have enough insurable hours for ei but i was aware about cerb ineligibility of mine. So,I have called them a number of times to repay the payment but no answer till now.I am just worried about incase they penalize me in the future for the money i am taking.

How could you possibly have the hours for EI but not have made $5000? Your previous posts indicate you are in the Toronto area, so would need over 600 hours to qualify for EI.

You wouldn't be penalized. You would have to pay back any wrongfully received funds, plus interest.
