Hey. I just need to know if there’s anyone who has ever been in a similar situation.

I am currently in my second year in my DLI and so far I have taken two semesters off (both Spring) due to financial issues.

Also, since I’m the only one that could pay my bills (rent, utilities etc) I had to keep working during the semesters I took off which I have found out is actually illegal.

Now I’m thinking of pursuing the Associate of Arts Degree option with the hope of getting a PGWP then a PR and going back to school as a domestic student so it’ll be easier to pay tuition.

I’ve spoken with International Services at my school and they’ve said I would need to disclose both the semesters off and the illegal work and include a letter of explanation in my application (and basically hope for the best)

So what I would like to know is:

- has anyone been in a similar situation?
- what other option would be better than the Associate of Arts?
- what would be the next steps if I get denied a PGWP?

Please serious answers only and no need to be cruel. Thank you:)

Are you in bc ? Which college? Which semester you took off ? Spring and fall ? Fall and winter? Winter and spring?

Basically, you're ineligible for the PGWP unless it was an approved break in classes or a scheduled break. The illegal work will not help.

If you are denied the PGWP, your options are to get an LMIA work permit, qualify for PR somehow, or leave. Sorry.

I know tuition is very expensive for foreign students. It's a shame this happened to you.

Yes I’m in BC. I’m currently at SFU but I took one year of college at FIC so I’ll probably go back there for the Associate of Arts. Both semesters I’ve taken off are Spring (Spring 2019 and Spring 2020)

If it’s spring you are fine . If you took spring off and took fall amd winter semester full time you are 100% good for pgwp . Make sure don’t take fall and winter semester off . Spring break is officially break . It’s Is not compulsory to take that semester

I think Spring break is also called Winter break

Spring break is may to September 3rd . 3 September to mid December is fall semester . 1st week of December - mid March is winter

Sorry my bad winter is first week of January to end of March. You took this semester off ?

Then you should be fine . You can write letter of explanation why you can’t take winter semester but took two full time semesters .
Note- did you took more than 3 courses per semester as it is full time semester in Bc ?

I varied between taking 3 and 4 courses but never less than 3 courses. Thank you Garry21:)

I’m not an experienced person but it’s good to consult with a lawyer after you complete your study and before you apply your wp. You have 180 to submit pgwp application so you have enough time to sort this . But I think you should ne fine as long as you took continuous semester not less than 3 courses each . Better to get a good lawyer at there is always risk to apply yourself.
