Hi

I did soft landing on Nov 1 2019 in Toronto and provided address of Alberta while applying for SIN. Then I came back to India. Now I am permanently moving on 25th Jan to Canada to Toronto. Wanted to know the following:

a) After how much time I should apply for the OHIP? Is there a wait period before which I should not apply?
b) I will be staying in AirBnb for initial few weeks. Can I use that address to apply? Will booking/invoice of airbnb work to apply?
c) Are there any travel restrictions after I apply?

a) You can apply immediately however you won't qualify for OHIP until you have lived in Canada for three months.
b) Yes - you can use the Airbnb address.
c) Yes - you must live in Canada for at least 153 days out of the first 183. So in the first six months, you can be outside of Canada for a maximum of 20 days.

Think @scylla means that you can only be away from Ontario for 30 days during the first 6 months. You also have to be in Ontario for the first 6 out of 12 months. Would suggest you read up on the general residency rules for OHIP. You can register at any ppint during the first 3 months and still use the day you landed in Ontario so if you are gettimg more permanent housing I would wait to sign up or you will need to get a new card after you move. Just make sure you keep a record of when you landed in Ontario. Once you have a lease would be a goos time to register for OHIP.

Just to add to this thread . I had to renew my OHIP card today, and directed to go to Service Ontario. So went to the office @
Bay/College. I’ve been in Ontario for 31 years, Canadian citizen etc . If I didn’t have everything required , no renewal. The agents were extremely diligent with people on work permits requesting OHIP coverage .There was surprisingly quite a lot . If you didn’t have that letter starting length of work etc, no coverage . Even if you had the letter, if it was missing anything they required, you were sent away to get a correct letter . Few people argued, but the agents brought out policy , and no go
So in a nutshell make sure you have everything, otherwise you’re sent packing
