Hi
I'm intending to migrate to Canada, i have been trained in India and have worked in the middle east.
I am interested to know what is the future for an eye specialist to get into practice the same speciallty in canada. Or does one have to compromise doing other specialties :(
Look forward to your replies guys....
thanks xxxxx

You are a medical doctor with a speciality in eyes or you are an optometrist? If the latter, look at http://www.cicic.ca/684/Optometrists.canada?prof=3121 for licensing info and if the former, look at http://www.cicic.ca/684/Specialist_Physicians_and_Surgeons.canada?prof=3111

Hi
I'm a practicing ophthalmologist in India. How do I migrate to Canada and practice there? What are the licensing requirements or exams I need to take?

Honestly no chance of practicing in Canada. You would need to pass the licensing exams and then repeat your full residency again. Opthamology has very few spots and are highly sought after by Canadian medical students so no spots will be left. No residency means you can't practice. Would encourage you to research how hard it is for IMGs to practice in Canada. Would explore other countries.

I am an Optometrist, in India. And getting a license to practice Optometry in Canada is very difficult and exhausitve and takes around 2-3 years to get one, and if Optometry is difficult, I am sure Opthalmology would be tougher.

Not close to the same. If you had the ability to retrain as an ophthamologist in Canada you are likely looking at close to a 10 year process. There is already competition for the few residency spots so it is would be an extremely rare event to have an open spot.

That is why I said it would be much tougher for an Ophthalmologist.

Hello,

NOC 3121 says there should be "
  • Three years of university undergraduate studies in mathematics and sciences
    and
A four-year university program in optometry are required.
  • Licensing by the provincial or territorial regulatory governing body is required."
If I currently do not possess any of above education requirement, does that mean I cannot apply under this NOC for EE?

Thank you

It is only applicable when you want to practice Optometry in Canada. If you have foreign work experience as an Optometrist while having a degree in Optometry, you can count that experience towards your EE profile.
