Dear fellas,

If I continue to work for my Canadian employer from my home country, let's say for 6 months (the employer has no issues with that), then will that time be counted towards the minimum stay requirements of 2 years?

It depends.

To count the time, you must first be hired for a role in Canada by your Canadian employer. You must work in the role in Canada for a while (at least a number of months, something like 6-8) before being transferred to a role outside of Canada. Once you complete the work outside of Canada, you must return to Canada and work for that same employer in Canada.

If you were hired directly for a role outside of Canada, you cannot count the time towards PR.

Thanks, Scylla. Yes, I was hired for a role in Canada by this employer, but I have just been working with them for like 2 months only. I will remain employed with the same employer after my return too. One thing though, working remotely is not something which asked by my employer, it's something I am doing for my issues. Does that make my stay outside ineligible?

Yes, this will not count. You have to be staying outside because the job requires you to, not because you choose to.

Ah - that changes everything. Yes - that means your time spent working outside of Canada won't count towards PR. For the time to count, your company must be the one to transfer you outside of Canada and your company must have actual operations in the location where they have transferred you and a requirement for you to be working in this office for your role.

Oh!! Well, that clears the misconceptions. Thanks @scylla and @21Goose. One like for both of you
