I'm American and my sponsor is Canadian when doing my taxes this year for 2010 it asked if i was married last year, and since i got married this year January, I should have no trouble or anything right?

I had the same question and called to ask, but you can also ask someone to be sure...
I did my taxes as SINGLE and I was married in January aswell..
You would state yourself as married for next years tax, since you were single until dec 31st of 2010, and married in 2011.
I'm a sponsor, so I'm not too sure if theres a difference between the applicant and a sponsor...
You should call and ask.

I'm not sure how it works exactly. I don't if you have to be maried all the tax period that you are declaring or you just change the status to married, if you are married at the time you are submitting your taxes. But in my opinion I will change it to married too avoid beein question and send red flags to CIC, besides if your spouse (the one being sponsored) did not work (no work permit) then you get a tax break of about $2,500

I did mine in 2005. Revenue Canada did ask me for my mariage certificate and gave me my GST back. Now , the question is will the CIC raise aquestion about my mariage now, that I am sponsoring her. Although her name was on my Canadian passport as my wife and beneficiary as well.

An old thread, I know, but I have a quick question in regards to updating status with CRA.

I have been living and working outside of Canada since 2001. During that time, I have not filed tax returns. In 2009, I got married. I never sent any updates on my marital status to CRA. Is this absolutely necessary, and if I don't do it before sending my application to CIC, will I be considered to have misrepresented???

I spoke with an CRA officer and he told me to send a fax with the updated information...but I am a non-resident for tax purposes, so still not clear on what to do.

Any ideas? Will I be rejected as my wife's sponsor if I don't update my marital status with CRA????

Worried...again.

Thanks,
FS

Anyone have any knowledge about the CRA marital status update and whether not having updated will cause CIC to reject my sponsorship???

I went to the CRA website and downloaded the marital status update form. I'm going to send that off when I send my application to CIC...

Should I include some kind of explanation with my CIC application?? I never even thought to update because I am still living abroad and I am still a non-resident for tax purposes...I planned to do all this when we land in Canada and settle...

Anyone??

Thanks!

FS

Bueller...Bueller...Bueller....Ferris Bueller?

Anyone know if this is going to cause rejection?? Please...I'm sending my app tomorrow via UPS...and this is the absolute last thing I am not sure about...

Thanks!

FS

No, your application won't be rejected for not updating your status with CRA. Since you have been residing exclusively outside Canada all this time and are non-resident for tax purposes, CRA won't be interested in you until you get back to Canada.

For CIC's purposes, what they need to see is proof you will be returning to Canada to re-settle when your wife's visa is granted. After that, dealing with CRA is up to you, I would suggest you put it on your to-do list as among the first things you need to address! Your status for tax purposes does not interest CIC as much as your ability to support your wife, that is really why they look to the Option C for information if you reside in Canada, and why you have to provide alternative sources of this information if you reside exclusively outside Canada.

Awesome! Thanks, Charlie!

Have a good time with your mom!

Cheers!

You update maritial status if you have a SIN number. Just call CRA and tell them of your status change but that you live abroad. They change your status as you are on their files from the past.

But I have a question, I just filled my latest tax income return last month and I didn't declared my change of status as married. Since my husband isn't in canada yet and not working here. does that cause a problem??

You don't claim together since he isn't working in Canada yet, but you still need to let CRA know your change in marital status. You can do it online if you have My Account (I didn't but I signed up for it, since it's easier than the mail-in version)

I tried to online, but it gave me an error...something about not having filed any returns in the last 2 years.

I will call them after the holiday and find out the fastest way to go about this...

Thanks!

I declared myself as married on my income tax return, and then they wanted to know my husband's income for the year, his SIN and all that - but he has never been to Canada, is not allowed into Canada (his PR application and appeal were rejected), and does not have a SIN. The result, though, was that I did not get my GST refund.
I've seen cases where 'married' or 'not married' on the tax forms was an issue when determining if the relationship was genuine. If you declare 'married', you can use that as proof of a genuine relationship. Usually, though, it is such a minor thing that I don't think CIC would ordinarily check.
Canadianwoman, i was asked the same thing. What you need to do is fill out CRA form for change in marital status and indicate that you are now married. I also include a letter that indicated that he lives overseas, what his occupation is, and provided approx. how much my spouse made in a month. They just want an idea so they can calculate your refund, GST and other benefits. Within a couple months they made adjustments, which were positive.

livin is 100% correct. You need to fax over a letter stating all those changes, if you do not have the form. It is very simple. I mail one and fax one. You also need to state your spouses income for the past 3 yrs even if you were not married then. This is what CRA wants. avoids delays. Mine was adjusted accordingly, got all my benefits/credit on time. I think filing as married on your option c does help the app.

Very Old thread I know but I have a question about the "married status" on the applicants side. I, the Sponsor, already updated my married status on my Canadian taxes back in 2016 when we were married, but we've just realized that my husband (who resides in the UK and is a British Citizen) never updated his status on HIS taxes in the UK. Is this a problem? Do they look into the principle applicant's tax information from their home country? [we're applying inland]
