Hi There

I am a British and Canadian Citizen, with only my UK Passport at the moment.

I have a fiance and a child on the way here in the UK and I wondered if I need to do anything beforehand to ensure they will gain Canadian Citizenship also.

Does anybody know?
  • Will my Child & Partner have automatic Citizenship (partner UK passport only)?
  • Do I need to get my Canadian Passport asap?
  • Do I need to notify anyone?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Andy

That link doesn't work for me, can you share an alternative please?

There is no alternative to that link. That link is to the Canada government's website which is all information you need on citizenship. Try opening the link via incognito mode.

Does not work for me either but go straight to this page which will give the info

https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/children/birth-abroad

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...on-citizenship-certificate-adults-minors.html

Note that if you ever want to travel back to Canada you must have a Canadian passport as you cannot use your UK one. Also makes it slightly easier to have one along with child’s citizenship certificate to get a child’s passport.

Your partner doesn't just get Canadian citizenship. You would need to sponsor him/her for PR. You must be either married or common-law to sponsor.

As a Canadian citizen, you are required to travel to Canada on a Canadian passport. Your UK passport will no longer be sufficient, as you can't obtain an eTA. So, yes... ASAP.

Thanks, that is what I though but I would like my child to have the opportunity.

I actually recently, did this on a British Passport in May 2019. I went via the States which seemed to do the trick.

I am getting my Canadian passport now.

Did you cross the land border with the USA? You should not have been allowed to board an aircraft to Canada on just your British passport.

Where were you born and how did you get your citizenship?

I was born in Canada with a Canadian father and English Mother. We left for UK when I was 3 years old.

I came back to live in BC from 16-18 years old

If you were born in Canada then yes your child can get citizenship through you. Your child will not be able to pass down her citizenship if she/he has a child out of Canada.

Yes, that is what i thought. Thank you for confirming this
