Hello, I am an international student and I am about to finish my PhD at the end of this year. I started in Sep 2015 and I was scheduled to finish the four year program in Aug 2019. However, during the summer of 2017, I was in a bad car accident that put me in a wheelchair for several months, I had to ask for a medical leave of absence during that time, the university support me and approve my absence, and my funding was extended for one more term (that is why I am scheduled to finish now by Dec 2019)

Now that I am about to finish, I am planning to apply for a PGWP, I am aware that the conditions are

have continuously studied full-time in Canada in a study program at least eight months long

I am disqualified now as I had to stop for 4 months my program, or do they consider my situation as I was in a bad medical condition back then?

I am also worried because probably I will face another surgery to fix problems that I am still having because of the accident. It is not a major thing but I will probably would need to take another term off or study part time this coming summer, as the doctor and my department committee suggested. In case that I am currently still eligible for a PGWP, if I have to go for another medical leave, will I continue qualifying?

I appreciate if someone has experience applying for a PGWP in spite of going to an approved medical leave.

Sorry to hear about the accident part.
you will be ok. you always need to have a status maintained in the country which you did and have a valid study permit. you might need to extend it in the future but no worries you will get it approved. you will be eligible for pgwp after finishing your phd.

You qualify for the PGWP in as much as your program is assured with back up letters from the school. The period of leave is not counted as a break because you where sick, they will only count the Time upon graduation. Having said that,if you decide to take some or remaing program as part time then you will automatically be disqualifying yourself from the PGWP.
Cheers

Hi, I have a similar case. I started as a masters in chemical engineering student, took a medical leave in summer 2018 due to neck surgery, then continued my studies in the next term (also I transferred from Masters of engineering in chemical engineering to masters of science in chemical engineering). If I have al the valid proof from my university and my doctor and that I transferred from a course based program to a thesis based program, am I eligible for PGWP? thank you again.

OP isn't finishing the PhD until the end of this year and won't know if the PGWP will be successful until sometime in 2020.
