We are applying for spousal sponsorship from the UK. I am a Canadian citizen and so are our children. Do we have to apply for a visa at the same time for my husband to work once we arrive or is that automatically included? I see that there are visas for people already in Canada and waiting on immigration but none for outside. I am eligible to work and can do so but my husband does make more than me and would like to apply for work as soon as we arrive. That is if we get approved.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

No you dont. So you will be sponsoring your husband under spousal sponsorship? If so then once he is approved, he will be issued a CoPR with a date by which he must land and declare P R. Once he has done this, he needs to trot along to any Services Canada office with passport and the stamped copy of the CoPR they will give him when he landed and ask tge nice people in the office for a SIN number, which they will give him on the spot. Once he has this, he can work anywhere in Canada.

Thank you. We are currently negotiating the minefield that are the forms. Hoping we have all information. It would be great if anyone knows of a checking service as we can't afford a representative.

A checking service that isn't a certified immigration consultant is a very risky situation. You truly get what you pay for - there are many, many reports here of people using unlicensed and uncertified consultants, getting denied, or banned, and not being able to have any recourse against the incompetent person they hired.

The forms are pretty self-explanatory, though long and complex. If you really, truly feel like you cannot fill them out, engage a certified consultant or a lawyer.

And just in case it wasn't clear - if you're applying from outside of Canada, the only way your partner can work upon arrival is if that arrival is after the permanent residency is granted. So approximately one year from application. You can't apply and then get on the next plane thinking he can work. I'm sure you knew that but just in case it wasn't clear, I thought I'd reiterate.

We do realise the process will take a year. The forms I have to say, after about 4 hours have been successfully navigated. Just need to get notarised copies of documents and we will send off. Thank you for your comments. Just doubting my ability as spent years negotiating the UK system only to be stumped at points by the Canadian system.

If you feel stumped by it, hire a professional. Don't hire someone who is unqualified because they give you a cheap rate. There are too many crooks out there who will defraud you and have your partner banned for five years from ever applying to enter Canada.
