How to get my American Boyfriend Canadian citizenship?

My boyfriend lives in America and we have been together 3 years, almost 4. We want to close the distance in a year or two and have him move to me in Canada. We’re spending this year figuring it out and gathering resources. He has no skilled trades, so I have no idea, but to get married. Is marriage the only doable option? How do I have him stay longer than 6 months during the processing of all the applications? How long does it take? What do I need/need to do? How do I do it? How’s he get a job? I’m a bit overwhelmed. He doesn't get citizenship. You need to sponsor him for PR, which requires that you be married or common-law. He can come to Canada as a visitor while a sponsorship app processes and extend his stay.
