Hello, I am the dependent in a PGP that is now in the background check phase.

My biggest concern is that I am currently a third year university student, with 1 more year to go before I graduate. I should be graduating by June 2020. From what I know visas are usually only good for about 1 year or until the medical test is expired.

If we were to receive the visa within the next few months and it is valid for up to a year or until our medical test expires (November 2019) would I able to ask for an extension so that I could have time to graduate without missing the chance of becoming a PR? I wouldn't want to leave in the middle of a semester or have to come back repeat it either.

No. You would have to come to Canada to land before expiry and return to finish your studies.
