They always do lol. As a note, I would watch what you are doing regarding volunteering. Even unpaid work can get you into trouble from what I have heard.
As long as that volunteering position wouldn't be a paid position if no one volunteer for it. (e.g. my hubby volunteered to be a hobby club executive. no one in those clubs got paid. They just do it so that people who like the same hobby will come out and enjoy it. Some one needs to do coordinating and connecting members.)

This is correct. If doing volunteer work, it must be for a NON PROFIT company.

Incorrect. A person can do volunteer work for a for-profit company. My local vet is certainly trying to make a profit from her business but has a volunteer program to help with the animals.

The easiest way to see if something qualifies as volunteering is if there are also Canadians doing the same work at the same place for free.

Non profit companies pay employees. You can do volunteer work that would never be paid. You also can't do any work around the house that could be paid work.

I'm going by info given to my friends bf when he was coming over from the US. He was told this by the border agent. Just something I specifically remembered, but this was back in 2006ish I want to say, maybe 2005?
